CENTRAL AMERICA

Guatemala

Highland markets, colonial streets, and volcanoes on every horizon.

Guatemala is color and altitude and living culture. We came for the history and stayed for the markets, the textiles, and the volcanoes that frame nearly every view. It asks a little more of a traveler than some places, and gives a great deal back.

We moved gently, acclimated to the altitude, and let local guides open doors we never could have on our own.

Antigua

Antigua is a beautifully preserved colonial town ringed by volcanoes, with cobbled streets that invite slow walking. We used it as our base — easy to love, easy to return to each evening.

Lake Atitlán & the highlands

The lake is ringed by villages, each with its own character, reached by small boats that double as the local bus. The highland markets are dazzling, and best approached with curiosity and respect rather than a camera held up the whole time.

Tips & practical notes

  • Give yourself a day to adjust to the altitude before anything strenuous.
  • Buy directly from the makers at the markets when you can — and ask before photographing people.
  • Shuttle services between towns are inexpensive and save long, winding drives.
