NORTHERN EUROPE
United Kingdom
London's museums and Bath's golden streets, with very good tea in between.
The United Kingdom is an easy, rewarding trip for a family that loves museums and history, and a gentle introduction to travel for anyone nervous about a language barrier. We split our time between the energy of London and the calm of Bath.
Trains made it effortless, and the rain — we were assured — was character-building.
So many of London's great museums are free, which makes the city extraordinarily generous to curious travelers. We went often and stayed briefly each time, treating the museums like neighborhood visits rather than marathons. The parks are as much a highlight as anything indoors.
Bath is a short, scenic train ride from London and feels a world away — honey-colored stone, Roman history, and an easy walkability that our whole family loved. The Roman baths themselves are remarkable, and the city around them is a pleasure simply to stroll.
